GM Recalls Over 18K Vans In US Over Brake Fluid Leak Concerns

General Motors (NYSE:GM) is recalling 18,325 vehicles in the U.S. owing to concerns of a potential brake fluid leak, auto safety regulator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Thursday.

What Happened: The recall population includes 2013-2019 Chevrolet Express Cutaway Vans and GMC Savana Cutaway Vans.

These vehicles are equipped with optional company-provided body mounts. “The brake line may have insufficient clearance to the body mounts, which can result in brake line damage that can lead to a brake fluid leak,” the NHTSA said. A leak of brake fluid can reduce braking performance, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM’s dealers will inspect and replace the brake lines at no cost to the consumer to resolve the issue, it added.

Why It Matters: While the automaker is not aware of any crashes or injuries owing to the issue, it is aware of 25 potential field reports involving damage to the brake line caused by contact with the body count, the company said. Some of these field reports were flagged by Transport Canada.

Last week, GM recalled nearly 450,000 vehicles in the U.S. over concerns that the electronic brake control module software may not show a warning light when a loss of brake fluid occurs.

The recall population then included trucks and SUVs: 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Escalade ESV.
